Flower fields and pesticide use interactively shape pollen beetle infestation and parasitism in oilseed rape fields

چکیده

Pollen beetles (Brassicogethes spp.) are the main pests of oilseed rape (OSR, Brassica napus) in Europe and responsible for massive yield losses. Upcoming pesticide resistances highlight need other means crop protection, such as natural pest control. Sown flower fields aim to counteract decrease insect biodiversity agricultural landscapes by providing resources ecosystem service providers. However, optimal age size increase control is still unclear. We conducted experiments on 31 OSR located along a gradient landscape-scale semi-natural habitat (SNH). were adjacent which differed age, continuity size, or calcareous grasslands. Pesticide-free areas established examine interactive effects use field characteristics. The abundance pollen beetle adults larvae, parasitism superparasitism rates recorded at increasing distances sites. Flower grasslands increased when compared neighbouring fields. threshold effective 35% could be reached pesticide-free maintained continuously least 6 years. In pesticide-sprayed areas, declined with distance field. Furthermore, larger than 1.5 ha able improve more smaller Synthesis applications. To promote (OSR), large should several years, create stable habitats enemies. continuous maintenance preferred, ploughing resowing after 5–6 years decreased positive can abrogate parasitism. This study highlights that sown have potential OSR, but this depending its hindered use.

Characterization of the pollen beetle, Brassicogethes aeneus, dispersal from woodlands to winter oilseed rape fields

Many crop pests rely on resources out of crop fields; understanding how they colonize the fields is an important factor to develop integrated pest management. In particular, the time of crop colonization and damage severity might be determined by pest movements between fields and non-crop areas. Notably, the pollen beetle, Brassicogethes aeneus, previously named Meligethes aeneus, one of the mo...

Distance from forest edge affects bee pollinators in oilseed rape fields

Wild pollinators have been shown to enhance the pollination of Brassica napus (oilseed rape) and thus increase its market value. Several studies have previously shown that pollination services are greater in crops adjoining forest patches or other seminatural habitats than in crops completely surrounded by other crops. In this study, we investigated the specific importance of forest edges in pr...

The potential of decision support systems to improve risk assessment for pollen beetle management in winter oilseed rape

BACKGROUND The reliance on and extensive use of pyrethroid insecticides have led to pyrethroid resistance in pollen beetle (Meligethes aeneus). Widespread adoption of best practice in pollen beetle management is therefore needed. Decision support systems (DSSs) that identify the risk period(s) for pest migration can help to target monitoring and control efforts, but they must be accurate and la...

Remote Estimation of Vegetation Fraction and Flower Fraction in Oilseed Rape with Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Data

This study developed an approach for remote estimation of Vegetation Fraction (VF) and Flower Fraction (FF) in oilseed rape, which is a crop species with conspicuous flowers during reproduction. Canopy reflectance in green, red, red edge and NIR bands was obtained by a camera system mounted on an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) when oilseed rape was in the vegetative growth and flowering stage. T...

Genetic Diversity of Oilseed Rape Fields and Feral Populations in the Context of Coexistence with GM Crops

Despite growing concern about transgenes escaping from fields, few studies have analysed the genetic diversity of crops in an agroecosystem over several years. Accurate information about the dynamics and relationship of the genetic diversity of crops in an agroecosystem is essential for risk assessment and policies concerning the containment of genetically modified crops and their coexistence w...
